About the Date Difference Calculator
Enter two dates and this calculator returns the span between them — in total days, in weeks and days, and as a calendar breakdown of years, months and days. Working days are counted separately, with weekend days shown alongside.
Two different measures are given because both are useful and they are not interchangeable. The total days figure is a plain count. The years, months and days breakdown follows the calendar, so a "month" is however long that particular month was.
Order does not matter; the tool sorts the dates itself. Use it for project timelines, notice periods, how long you have lived somewhere, or how many days remain until a deadline.
How to use the Date Difference Calculator
- Pick the from and to dates.
- Select Calculate the difference.
- The headline counts whole days between them; the inclusive figure counts both ends.
- Business days exclude Saturdays and Sundays.
- Entering the dates the wrong way round is handled automatically.
The two ways to measure a span
Total days = a straight count of calendar days between the dates
Y / M / D = whole years, then whole months, then leftover days
Working days = the same span counting Monday to Friday only
Worked example
From 1 January 2026 to 6 September 2026.
Total days: January through August is 31+28+31+30+31+30+31+31 = 243, plus 5 more days in September.
Calendar breakdown: 8 whole months from 1 January to 1 September, then 5 days.
248 days — 8 months and 5 days — 177 working days
Note that 248 days is not 8.16 "average months" of 30 days each. The calendar breakdown and the day count answer different questions.
Do you count both the start and end date?
It depends on the convention, and the answer changes your result by one day. Both are in common use:
- Exclusive counting — count the days between the dates. From 1 March to 5 March is 4 days. This is what the calculator reports.
- Inclusive counting — count both endpoints. From 1 March to 5 March is 5 days. Common for hotel nights, hire periods, event durations and some legal deadlines.
To get the inclusive figure, add one to the total shown. Where a contract or a legal deadline is involved, check which convention applies — a one-day error at the end of a notice period can matter a great deal.
Why months are awkward to count
Because they are not a fixed length. A month can be 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, so "how many months between these dates" has no single answer unless you say how you are counting.
| Span | Total days | Calendar months | Days ÷ 30.44 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Jan – 1 Feb | 31 | 1 month | 1.02 |
| 1 Feb – 1 Mar (2026) | 28 | 1 month | 0.92 |
| 1 Jan – 1 Jul | 181 | 6 months | 5.95 |
| 1 Jul – 1 Jan | 184 | 6 months | 6.04 |
Rows two and four make the point. February and July are both "one month" and "six months" respectively in calendar terms, yet the day counts differ. The calendar breakdown is what people mean in ordinary speech; the total-days figure is what you want for anything being counted precisely.
Working days and the 1.4 rule
The calculator counts Monday to Friday within your span and reports weekend days separately. A full week contains 5 working days out of 7, so calendar spans convert to roughly 71% working days — or, going the other way, working days take about 1.4 times as long in calendar terms.
| Calendar span | Approx. working days | Approx. weekend days |
|---|---|---|
| 1 week | 5 | 2 |
| 1 month (30 days) | 21–22 | 8–9 |
| 3 months (91 days) | 65 | 26 |
| 6 months (182 days) | 130 | 52 |
| 1 year (365 days) | 260–262 | 104–105 |
Public holidays are not deducted. Holiday calendars differ by country, region and year, so building one in would give most users a wrong answer. Most countries observe 8 to 15 public holidays annually — subtract those manually where the deadline matters.
What this tool is for
- Project timelines — elapsed and working days between milestones.
- Notice and probation periods — check the exact end date.
- Countdowns — days remaining to a deadline, a wedding or a trip.
- Residency and employment records — how long a period actually lasted.

How to calculate days between two dates
Count the days left in the first month, add the full months in between, then add the days in the last month. From 15 March to 10 June: 16 days left in March, 30 in April, 31 in May and 10 in June gives 87 days. This tool does that instantly, and it shows the difference between two dates in weeks, months and years as well.
Weeks between two dates
The result shows Weeks and days for you. To do it by hand, take the total days and divide by 7. The whole number is the weeks. The remainder is the extra days.
Worked example
From 1 January to 6 September 2026 is 248 days.
248 ÷ 7 = 35, remainder 3.
35 weeks and 3 days
Months between two dates
Count whole calendar months first. Then count the leftover days. That is what the years, months, days line does. A decimal figure such as "8.2 months" is only an estimate, because months vary in length.
- 1 March to 1 June — exactly 3 months (92 days).
- 15 January to 10 April — 2 months and 26 days.
- 31 January to 28 February — 28 days, but most people call it one month.
Years between two dates
For long spans, such as years of service or time at an address, the years figure matters most. Count full years from the start date, then months, then days.
Worked example
Someone started a job on 15 March 2010. How long had they worked there on 6 September 2026?
15 March 2010 to 15 March 2026 is 16 years. Then 5 months to 15 August. Then 22 days to 6 September.
16 years, 5 months and 22 days
Calculate duration between two dates, in any unit
The same span can be written many ways. Pick the unit your form or plan asks for.
| Unit | 1 Jan – 6 Sep 2026 | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Days | 248 | Deadlines, countdowns, visa days |
| Weeks and days | 35 weeks, 3 days | Pregnancy, training plans |
| Months and days | 8 months, 5 days | Leases, notice periods |
| Hours | 5,952 | Billing, logs |
| Business days | 177 | Delivery times, legal deadlines |

Frequently asked questions
The calculator counts the exact calendar days between the two dates you enter. From 1 January to 6 September 2026 is 248 days, which is also 8 months and 5 days in calendar terms, and 177 working days. Order does not matter — the tool sorts the dates for you and reports the span either way round.
That depends on the convention, and it changes the answer by one day. This calculator counts the days between the dates, so 1 March to 5 March is 4 days. Inclusive counting, which includes both endpoints, gives 5 — the convention for hotel nights, hire periods and some legal deadlines. Add one to the total shown if you need the inclusive figure.
Monday to Friday within your date range, with weekend days reported separately. Since a week holds 5 working days out of 7, a calendar span is about 71% working days. Turned around, working days take roughly 1.4 times as long in calendar terms — so a 30-working-day period runs closer to six weeks than four.
No. Only weekends are excluded. Public holidays vary by country, region and year, and some are set by lunar observation, so a built-in list would be wrong for most users. Most countries observe between 8 and 15 public holidays a year. Where a deadline is legally significant, check the official calendar for that jurisdiction and subtract those days yourself.
Find the total days between the dates and divide by 7. The whole number is the weeks and the remainder is the extra days. 248 days, for example, is 35 weeks and 3 days. The calculator shows this line for you.
Count the whole calendar months from the start date, then the leftover days. From 15 January to 10 April is 2 months and 26 days. A decimal month figure is only approximate because months have 28 to 31 days.
