Age Difference Calculator
The exact gap between two people’s ages — a number that never changes, no matter when you measure it.

About the Age Difference Calculator
Enter two dates of birth and this calculator gives the exact gap between them in years, months and days, plus the total in days and weeks. It also identifies which person is older, which saves working it out from the dates yourself.
The gap it reports is a fixed quantity. Unlike an age, which grows every day, the difference between two birthdates never changes. Two people born five years apart are five years apart at every moment of their lives, whether they are eight and thirteen or seventy and seventy-five.
Use it for siblings, couples, colleagues or any two people. If you want the span between two calendar dates rather than two people, the date difference calculator is the right tool.
How to use the Age Difference Calculator
- Enter both dates of birth. The order does not matter.
- Select Calculate the age gap.
- The gap is shown in years, months and days, and in raw days.
- Each person’s current age is shown alongside for context.
- The gap stays constant for life — it is the same today as it will be in thirty years.
How this age difference calculator online works
The calculator sorts the two dates, then measures from the earlier to the later using calendar arithmetic — the same method the age calculator uses, applied between two births rather than between a birth and today.
Gap = calendar difference between the two birth dates
Whole years first, then whole months, then remaining days. Order of entry does not matter.
Worked example
One sibling born 12 June 2001, the other born 3 November 2005.
From 12 June 2001 to 12 June 2005 is 4 whole years. From 12 June to 12 October 2005 is 4 more months. From 12 October to 3 November the day has not been reached, so borrow from October's 31 days: 22 days.
4 years, 4 months, 22 days — 1,605 days apart
That figure holds forever. In 2050 they will still be 4 years, 4 months and 22 days apart.
Why the gap never changes
Because both people age at exactly the same rate. Each birthday adds one year to both, so the difference between them stays put.
| Year | Older sibling | Younger sibling | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2010 | 9 | 4 | 4y 4m 22d |
| 2025 | 24 | 19 | 4y 4m 22d |
| 2040 | 39 | 34 | 4y 4m 22d |
| 2060 | 59 | 54 | 4y 4m 22d |
What does change is the gap as a proportion. A five-year gap makes one child more than twice the age of the other at 4 and 9. At 40 and 45 it is barely 12% — the same number of years, a completely different lived experience. This is why age gaps feel enormous in childhood and shrink into insignificance later.
The half-your-age-plus-seven rule
This is a piece of social folklore, not a law or a scientific finding. It suggests a rough lower bound on a socially conventional partner age: halve your age, then add seven.
Minimum = (your age ÷ 2) + 7
Maximum = (your age − 7) × 2
| Your age | Rule's minimum | Rule's maximum | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22 | 18 | 30 | 12 years |
| 30 | 22 | 46 | 24 years |
| 40 | 27 | 66 | 39 years |
| 50 | 32 | 86 | 54 years |
| 60 | 37 | 106 | 69 years |
The range widens sharply with age, which reflects the intuition it came from: a two-year gap matters a great deal at sixteen and very little at sixty. Its origins are literary rather than empirical, and it has no standing of any kind.
The rule is not a legal test. Age of consent laws are set by jurisdiction and are the only thing that matters legally. This is a conversational heuristic, nothing more, and it says nothing about whether any particular relationship is a good one.
Sibling gaps in practice
- Under 2 years — children often share activities and friends, though the early years are demanding for parents.
- 2 to 4 years — the most common spacing in many countries; enough independence with plenty of overlap.
- 5 or more years — less rivalry, but different school stages and interests.
- 10 or more years — siblings often grow up in effectively different households.
How this differs from the date difference calculator
They run similar arithmetic on different things. This tool takes two birthdates and reports a permanent gap between two people. The date difference calculator takes any two dates and measures the span between them — useful for project timelines, notice periods or counting down to an event, and it can count working days only.
Age difference calculator by birthday
You only need two birthdays. Type in both dates of birth, and the calculator does the rest. It works out who is older and by how much — in years, months and days, and in total days and months.
Do not know the exact day? Pick the first of the month. The result will be right to within a few weeks, which is fine for most questions. For anything official, like a legal or insurance form, use the real dates.
Quick example
Person A was born on 12 May 1990. Person B was born on 3 February 1996.
From 12 May 1990 to 12 May 1995 is 5 years. From 12 May 1995 to 3 February 1996 is 8 months and 22 days.
Age gap: 5 years, 8 months and 22 days
Acceptable age gap calculator for dating
Many people use an age gap calculator for dating questions. The usual yardstick is the half-plus-seven rule shown above. Here is how to use it in two steps:
- Find the rule's range for the older person.
- Check whether the younger person's age falls inside it.
| Couple | Gap | Older person's minimum | Inside the rule? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 and 21 | 3 years | 19 | Yes |
| 35 and 26 | 9 years | 24.5 | Yes |
| 45 and 28 | 17 years | 29.5 | No |
| 60 and 40 | 20 years | 37 | Yes |
Notice the last row. A 20-year gap passes at 60 but a 17-year gap fails at 45. The rule cares about life stage, not the raw number of years. Treat it as a talking point, not a verdict.
How common are age gaps?
Most couples are close in age. In the United States, Census Bureau data show that most married couples are within a few years of each other. Gaps of ten years or more are relatively uncommon. So a 2–3 year gap is ordinary, and a 15-year gap is unusual but far from rare.

Frequently asked questions
Enter both dates of birth and the calculator measures the calendar difference between them. For births on 12 June 2001 and 3 November 2005, the gap is 4 years, 4 months and 22 days, or 1,605 days. Order does not matter — the tool sorts the dates and tells you which person is older. The result is a permanent figure, not one tied to today.
No. Both people age at the same rate, so the difference between their birthdates never moves. Two people born five years apart are five years apart for life. What changes is the proportion: at 4 and 9 one child is more than twice the other's age, while at 40 and 45 the same gap is barely 12% — which is why age gaps feel so much larger in childhood.
It is a piece of social folklore suggesting a conventional minimum partner age: halve your age and add seven. At 30 that gives 22; at 50 it gives 32. Reversed, it implies a maximum of (your age − 7) × 2. It has literary rather than scientific origins and no legal standing whatsoever — age of consent laws vary by jurisdiction and are the only rules that actually apply.
This tool compares two people's birthdates and returns a gap that never changes. The date difference calculator measures the span between any two calendar dates — a project start and end, a notice period, a countdown — and can count working days only. Same underlying arithmetic, different questions, so each page reports what its own question needs.
There is no fixed answer. A popular yardstick is the half-your-age-plus-seven rule: the younger partner should be at least half the older partner's age plus seven. It is folklore, not science, and the law only cares about age of consent.
Yes. Enter both dates of birth and the calculator gives the exact gap in years, months and days. If you only know the month and year, use the first of the month for a close estimate.
