Percentage to CGPA Calculator
Convert a percentage back into CGPA — the reverse of the standard rule.

Conversion rules differ between institutions. Check the formula shown against your own university's published rule before using the result on an application or transcript.
About the Percentage to CGPA Calculator
This is the reverse conversion: you hold a percentage and an application wants a CGPA. Divide by the same factor your institution multiplies by. On a 10-point scale that means CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5; on a 5-point scale divide by 20, and on a 4-point scale divide by 25.
Enter your percentage, choose the scale, and the calculator returns the CGPA along with the classification band, the equivalent letter grade and the 4.0 GPA figure. If your university publishes a different multiplier, put it in the custom field and the tool applies yours instead of the default.
One caution worth stating early. Reversing a conversion does not recreate the original grade — it produces an estimate of it. Where the original CGPA exists on a transcript, use that number rather than one derived backwards from a rounded percentage.
How to use the Percentage to CGPA Calculator
- Enter your percentage.
- Choose the CGPA scale you want it on.
- Add a custom divisor if your university uses one.
- Select Convert to CGPA.
- Converting back with the CGPA-to-percentage tool returns your original figure.
The formula
10-point scale : CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5
5-point scale : CGPA = percentage ÷ 20
4-point scale : CGPA = percentage ÷ 25
Worked example
You scored 76% and need it as a CGPA on the 10-point scale.
76 ÷ 9.5 = 8.0
CGPA 8.0 — a Distinction, since 76% clears the 75% band
Check it in reverse: 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%. The two calculators agree, which is the quickest way to confirm you picked the right scale.

Why the reverse conversion is only an estimate
Three things get lost on the way back, and it is worth knowing what they are.
- Rounding. Your percentage was probably rounded when it was issued. A CGPA of 8.42 and one of 8.47 both round to 80%, so dividing 80 by 9.5 cannot tell you which you held.
- The multiplier may not have been 9.5. If your percentage came from a ×10 rule, dividing by 9.5 inflates the CGPA by about 5%.
- Some universities never used a formula. Where a published lookup table produced the percentage, no division reproduces it.
Where your transcript already states a CGPA, quote that figure. Use this calculator when a percentage is genuinely all you have, and describe the result as an approximate equivalent rather than an official grade.
Choosing the right scale
Look at the maximum your institution awards, since that is what sets the divisor:
- 10-point — the most common in Indian universities and under CBSE. Divide by 9.5.
- 5-point — used by some institutions and a number of European systems. Divide by 20.
- 4-point — the US GPA scale. Divide by 25, though the banded method our percentage to GPA converter uses is more accurate for US applications.
If your grade sheet shows results out of 10, you are on a 10-point scale. Anything above 4.0 rules out the US scale immediately.

Frequently asked questions
Divide your percentage by 9.5 on a 10-point scale. A 76% becomes 76 ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA. For a 5-point scale divide by 20, and for a 4-point scale divide by 25. Confirm the result by multiplying back: 8.0 × 9.5 returns 76%, which tells you the scale was right. Use your university's own multiplier if it publishes one.
Arithmetically yes, practically not quite. Dividing by 9.5 reverses multiplying by 9.5, but your percentage was almost certainly rounded before you saw it, so the original CGPA cannot be recovered exactly. A CGPA of 8.42 and 8.47 both show as 80%. If your transcript states a CGPA, quote that number rather than one worked backwards.
Match it to the maximum your institution awards. Grades out of 10 mean a 10-point scale, so divide by 9.5 — this is standard across Indian universities and CBSE. Grades out of 5 mean a 5-point scale, so divide by 20. Out of 4 is the US GPA scale. If your CGPA is above 4.0, you are definitively not on the US scale.
Most likely because your university applies a different rule. Common alternatives include dividing by 10, the Mumbai University formula of (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, and published lookup tables that use no formula at all. Rounding at the source contributes too. Enter your institution's own multiplier in the custom field, and treat its published figure as final.
