Quick answers

  • What is a 70 percent grade? A C−. It is passing, but just above the D range.
  • What is a 76 in letter grade? A C, at the top of the 73–76% band.
  • What grade is an 80? A B−, the bottom of the B range.
  • What is a 67 percent grade? A D+.
  • What grade is a 60? A D− — usually the lowest passing grade. Below 60% is an F.
  • What is a 90? An A−.

The 10-point scale (no plus or minus)

Many schools use a simpler scale:

LetterPercentage
A90–100%
B80–89%
C70–79%
D60–69%
FBelow 60%

On this scale, a 76 is simply a C and an 80 is a B.

Why your school might differ

  • Some schools use a 7-point scale, where an A starts at 93 and a D at 70.
  • Colleges often set their own cut-offs per course in the syllabus.
  • Rounding rules vary. An 89.5 may round up to an A− in one class and stay a B+ in another.
  • Curves can shift every boundary up or down.

Always check the syllabus. When it is silent, the chart above is the safest guess.

What is a passing grade?

In most US schools, D− (60%) is the lowest passing grade. But many colleges require a C or C− (70–73%) in major courses or prerequisites. Some graduate programs need a B (83%) in every course.

Common test scores, converted

Tests are rarely out of 100. Here are some of the most common results:

20 / 2580%B−
22 / 2588%B+
28 / 4070%C−
32 / 4080%B−
35 / 4087.5%B+
38 / 5076%C
45 / 5090%A−

Shortcut multipliers: out of 25, multiply by 4. Out of 40, multiply by 2.5. Out of 50, multiply by 2.

Grade scales outside the US

Letter grades are mostly an American system. Other countries band percentages very differently, so never convert between them using a US chart:

  • UK universities: a First is usually 70% and above, a 2:1 is 60–69%, a 2:2 is 50–59% and a Third is 40–49%. A 70% is an excellent mark there, not a C−.
  • India (CBSE): grades run from A1 (91–100) and A2 (81–90) down to D (33–40), with E below 33.
  • France and many others: marks are out of 20, with 10 as the pass mark — see our guide to grades out of 20.

Turn a score into a percentage first

Got 43 out of 55? Divide and multiply by 100: 43 ÷ 55 × 100 = 78.2%, a C+. For weighted courses, use the grade calculator to get your overall percentage, then read the letter from the chart. Wondering what you need on the final? The final grade calculator works it out.

Frequently asked questions

70% is a C− on the common US plus/minus scale, and a C on the simpler 10-point scale. It is a passing grade.

Usually yes. 60% is a D−, the lowest passing grade at most US schools. Many colleges still require a C or better in major or prerequisite courses.

80% is a B− on the plus/minus scale and a B on the 10-point scale.

A C on the standard plus/minus scale, which covers 73% to 76%. On a simple 10-point scale it is also a C.

Only if your teacher rounds up. On the standard scale, 89.5 rounds to 90, an A−. Without rounding it stays a B+. Your syllabus usually says which rule applies.
