How Many Calories Do 10,000 Steps Burn?
Most people burn 30 to 70 calories per 1,000 steps. Your weight and pace set where you land.

Calories per 1,000 and 10,000 steps
These figures assume an easy walking pace of about 3 mph (4.8 km/h) and roughly 2,000 steps per mile — typical for an adult of average height.
| Body weight | Per 1,000 steps | 5,000 steps | 10,000 steps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55 kg (121 lb) | 34 kcal | 168 kcal | 337 kcal |
| 70 kg (154 lb) | 43 kcal | 214 kcal | 429 kcal |
| 85 kg (187 lb) | 52 kcal | 260 kcal | 521 kcal |
| 100 kg (220 lb) | 61 kcal | 306 kcal | 612 kcal |
| 115 kg (254 lb) | 70 kcal | 352 kcal | 704 kcal |
So for most people, 10,000 steps burn roughly 300 to 700 calories.
At a brisk pace
Walking faster, at about 3.5 mph (5.6 km/h, roughly 4.3 METs), takes about 86 minutes for 10,000 steps and burns a bit more:
| Body weight | Per 1,000 steps | 10,000 steps |
|---|---|---|
| 55 kg (121 lb) | 35 kcal | 355 kcal |
| 70 kg (154 lb) | 45 kcal | 452 kcal |
| 85 kg (187 lb) | 55 kcal | 548 kcal |
| 100 kg (220 lb) | 64 kcal | 645 kcal |
| 115 kg (254 lb) | 74 kcal | 742 kcal |
The gain from walking faster is modest — about 5% more for the same steps. Hills and distance matter more than speed.
How to calculate calories from steps
- Turn steps into time. At about 100 steps a minute (an easy pace), 10,000 steps take about 100 minutes.
- Pick a MET value. MET means how hard an activity is compared with resting. Easy walking at 3 mph is about 3.5 METs; brisk walking at 3.5 mph is about 4.3.
- Use the formula.
Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200
Example: 70 kg, 8,000 steps at an easy pace
8,000 steps ≈ 4 miles ≈ 80 minutes at 3 mph.
3.5 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 4.29 kcal a minute. × 80 minutes.
About 343 calories
What changes the number
- Body weight — moving more weight takes more energy.
- Speed — brisk walking burns more per minute, though it takes fewer minutes for the same steps.
- Hills and treadmill incline — walking uphill can raise the burn by 50% or more.
- Carrying a load — a weighted backpack (rucking) adds noticeably.
- Stride length — taller people cover more distance per step.
How many steps to burn a set amount?
For a 70 kg person at an easy pace, about 43 calories per 1,000 steps:
- 100 calories — about 2,300 steps
- 250 calories — about 5,800 steps
- 500 calories — about 11,700 steps
Heavier people need fewer steps for the same burn; lighter people need more.
Steps per mile depend on your height
We used 2,000 steps a mile above. Real stride length is roughly 41% of your height, so the true count varies:
| Height | Stride (approx.) | Steps per mile | Steps per km |
|---|---|---|---|
| 155 cm (5 ft 1 in) | 64 cm | about 2,500 | about 1,560 |
| 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) | 70 cm | about 2,290 | about 1,420 |
| 185 cm (6 ft 1 in) | 77 cm | about 2,100 | about 1,310 |
A shorter person takes more steps to cover a mile, so 10,000 steps means less distance — and slightly fewer calories than the first table shows. A taller person covers more ground.
Gross vs net calories
The figures above are gross calories — they include what you would burn just standing there. The extra calories from walking (net) are roughly 20–25% lower. That matters if you are adding walking calories back into a diet.
Why your fitness tracker disagrees
Trackers estimate from your steps, heart rate and profile. Studies show step counts are fairly accurate, but calorie estimates can be off by 20% or more. Treat any number — ours included — as a guide.
Does 10,000 steps help weight loss?
It helps, but it is not magic. Burning about 430 extra calories a day is meaningful, yet food intake still matters more for weight. Work out your daily needs in the calorie calculator, then use walking to support it. And you do not need exactly 10,000: research links even 7,000 to 8,000 steps a day with lower health risks than very low step counts.
Frequently asked questions
About 300 to 700 calories for most adults. A 70 kg (154 lb) person walking at an easy pace burns roughly 430 calories over 10,000 steps, which is about five miles.
Roughly 30 to 70 calories, depending mostly on body weight. At 70 kg it is about 43 calories per 1,000 steps at an easy walking pace.
About 100 minutes at an easy pace of around 100 steps a minute, or about 85 minutes walking briskly. Most people spread their steps through the day rather than doing them in one walk.
For a 70 kg (154 lb) person walking at an easy pace, about 11,700 steps. A heavier person needs fewer steps, and walking uphill or carrying a load cuts the number further.
